California Condor

With a 9 foot wingspan, the California Condor (aymnogyps californianus) is the largest bird in North America and one of the largest flying birds in the world. With only 22 condors left in existence, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established the ‘California Condor Recovery Program’. Although still listed as ‘critically endangered’ by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, captive breeding and reintroduction programs have had remarkable success in preventing the disappearance of the California Condor in the wild.
